Welcome to the Mendota High School Relay for Charity Webpage

Seven years ago members of the Mendota High School Cross Country team had an idea.  They wanted to test themselves by passing a baton around a track for a 24 hour period.  Just to see how far they could go.  With further discussion they decided they would like their efforts to benefit a cause by adding fundraising and creating exposure.  That inaugural run led us to a family with a boy struggling with Batten Disease.  A rare neurological disorder, Batten attacks the central nervous system gradually taking away one's vision, mobility, and life.  While only 500 to 1,000 children in the United States have the disease, the family of Chuck Montavon of nearby Compton, IL was facing the devastating reality of their son Jeff's diagnosis.

That first year, Mendota harriers and the Montavons, along with their family and friends, raised $2000 for research on Batten Disease.  Each year since, the donations and participation has grown.  To date our relay has generated over $40,000 to the Batten Disease Support and Research Association (BDSRA) with all funds directed to research.

Our 8th Annual Relay for Charity begins at noon on June 12 and continues until noon on June 13.  We typically have over 50 runners participate, another couple dozen walk with a baton, and cover over 500 miles.
